From Handshakes to Handholds: my Journey of Trust-building in External Relations
In my capacity as an External Relations and Partnerships Officer (ERPO) at the World Health Organization, my role extends beyond forging partnerships; it is fundamentally about building trust, one interaction at a time. Trust serves as the bedrock of all relationships, and within the sphere of global health, it acts as the conduit that unites a diverse array of stakeholders towards a shared objective: the health and well-being of communities.
The intricate interplay of diplomacy and global health begins with a handshake, a universally acknowledged gesture of greeting and respect. However, this initial contact is merely the precursor to a sequence of strategic engagements, transparent communications, and shared experiences that metamorphose these initial handshakes into firm handholds, symbolizing mutual understanding and commitment.
Build trust before you need it!
The construction of trust within the realm of external relations is a meticulous and deliberate process. It commences with an appreciation of cultural nuances and a respect for the country’s local customs with which we are engaging. In the context of Gabon, this necessitates a sensitivity to the values and expectations of the government and the local communities. It involves active listening, learning from the people, and aligning our objectives with their needs and aspirations.
The journey towards trust is underpinned by consistency and reliability. As an ERPO, I ensure that our commitments are fulfilled, our actions mirror our words, and our support remains steadfast. Whether through collaborative programs, capacity-building initiatives, or emergency responses, we stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our health partners.
Furthermore, trust is reinforced through transparency and accountability. We circulate information openly, report on our progress with integrity, and welcome evaluation. This openness engenders a sense of shared ownership and responsibility, which is vital for the maintenance of enduring partnerships.
The process of trust-building is a continuous journey. It evolves with each project, each crisis, and each success. It is a journey with checkpoints but without a definitive endpoint because trust requires ongoing nurturing. Ultimately, the handholds we have secured serve not only our current collaborations but also lay the groundwork for future endeavours, ensuring that collectively, we can confront any challenge and enhance the health and wealth of the communities we serve, leaving no one behind.
In conclusion, the journey of trust-building in external relations, from the initial handshakes to the confident handholds, is a testament to the power of partnership and collaboration. At the WHO Gabon country office, we remain committed to this journey, aware of the fact that it is through trust that we can exert the most significant impact on global health.
Dear Mr. Bayiha,
I’m really impressed by the commitment to trust-building detailed in this blog post.
The emphasis on cultural sensitivity, active listening, and aligning objectives with local needs resonates with our core values. This is, according to me, the main challenge to reach a sustainable impact.
